Children and winter backcountry activities education

Remember what you were drawing in your elementary school years? We came across few interesting pictures drawn by children for 2004 World Ski Mountaineering Championships in Val d’ Aran, Spain. The drawings show even children in very early age can know about backcountry activities quite a lot.

Interesting point is that children from Val d’ Aran don’t only know you need skis for backcountry skiing but as your safety equipment you need (or should have) an avalanche beacon and a snow shovel.

By the drawings we assume that the young fellows were around 6-10 years old which makes it even more interesting. Although we don’t know how these children gained this knowledge (through education or observation) it certainly inspires.

It is a great step towards backcountry safety because once they start to go to backcountry on their own there is much greater chance they will be willing to educate themselves about possible dangers before a tragedy strikes.

(Thanks to Peter Svatojansky, our friend and ski mountaineering competitor, for these photos.)
