Avalanche beacon Ortovox s1 postponed

In June 2005 we informed you in our article about a new avalanche beacon from Ortovox - Ortovox S1 - which should set new standards for requirements and functionality of avalanche beacons.

Avalanche beacon Ortovox S1But according to the company's website and a confirmation from Ortovox distributor in Canada it seems that the miracle won't happen yet. This revolutionary avalanche beacon was scheduled to get to the stores just around this time and we hoped we could bring it to you in our store as well. The news is that "development and test phase hasn't been finished yet", according to Ortovox.com. The new scheduled release is now the season 2006/2007.

We understand this not as a failure from Ortovox but rather as a very responsible approach by the Germans to make sure the avalanche beacon will be 100% ready. Read more about Ortovox s1 in our previous article.

Thus if you were planning on upgrading your avalanche beacon it is probably a good idea to wait few more months to get the most for your money. And who knows maybe other avalanche safety equipment manufacturers will try to respond to Ortovox s1 with something even more innovative.

Meanwhile don't forget your probe, shovel, avalanche beacon and first aid kit on your trips to winter backcountry.
