Why and by whom was backcountrysafety.com started?

Who we are

We are people who spend most of our free time outdoors whether backcountry skiing, climbing, biking, hiking, running, kayaking, etc. Being such adventurers, we always seek information about backcountry safety thus making our trips safer.

Some of us have gone through certified training such as UIAA avalanche courses or guide courses. Some of us just learn from our own experience and from our more experienced friends. We believe that both methods of the above educational styles are helpful and equally important. They both have advantages and disadvantages.

Why it started

Alongside of the two there is a third option/path that can enhance your education even more – resources such as relevant publications, books, internet, video, etc. Although all this is already available we, at backcountrysafety.com have found that often times what we understand while reading information/instructions is not really what the author has meant. Few days later a more experienced fellow corrects us when practising techniques together.

Certain things such as avalanche safety procedures must not be left to our imagination or guessing! We strongly feel that there is a serious need for an improvement towards efficiency and correctness.

What do we want - mission

Therefore, by opening and running the backcountrysafety.com we would like to make your learning experience more effective, enjoyable, and of course, more useful. We want to encourage backcountry and avalanche safety professionals to share their own experiences.

Also, we want to challenge public to ask more questions thus actively pursue their own education in backcountry and avalanche safety topics. Our site is meant to serve as a meeting platform for everybody willing to share knowledge on one side and eager to improve on the other. Let’s meet and benefit from each other!
